Siu Ng
If Siu Ng of Victoria Park has any advice to pass onto future NEIS participants, it's this...
"The mentoring NEIS provided helped me to understand that my business's biggest asset was ME and therefore I needed the most looking after."
Siu Ng offers translating/interpreting services in Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese to professional organisations and individuals specialising in medical, legal and business/accounting areas. Siu also contracts her services out to local travel and tour companies, preparing commentary on Perth sites to translate to overseas tourist groups.
After a short stay overseas, Siu was faced with the decision whether to return to the area of employment she had left before her travel or take on a new challenge...her own business. After researching the NEIS program, Siu decided her career lay with assisting others with the barriers of language.
While studying a certificate in Tourism, Siu completed her NEIS Small Business Course via correspondence and became a small business owner in September 2003.
Siu credits the approachable, friendly and encouraging staff at Wells & Associates and the practical makeup of the modules to the success of her business. That, coupled with her hard work and her new-found ability to say 'No'.
"The NEIS program is made up of study that relates directly to your business idea. The modules make you think in detail about the different areas of owning a small business and then you learn to relate this theory directly back to your own business, ultimately developing your business plan."
"The mentoring support is also such a critical part of the NEIS program. It was Richard, my mentor, who helped me to understand that I didn't have to take on every single job that was offered to me and I now feel confident in saying 'No' to jobs that do not benefit the business."
"Without the NEIS training and the ongoing support, I don't think I would be in the position I am in today."
Siu looks forward to expanding her qualifications and her business with the recent completion of the new Perth Convention Centre, hopefully providing new, exciting business prospects for her.
