Mr. Micks

For Mick Dash, it's hard to believe that just over a year ago he was having to travel up to 2.5 hours to reach work sites, considering now the success of his own local business - situated and operating directly in his own backyard, Yanchep.

Based from home, 'Mr. Micks' provides Carpentry & Concrete Services directly to homes and businesses in the Yanchep area and surrounding suburbs. His biggest challenge now is whether Friday night drinks are at the local pub or his house!

After registering for government assistance, due to the lack of Industry contracts and time wasting travelling, Mick was introduced to the NEIS Program. After careful consideration and encouragement from friends, Mick and his wife Sue completed the NEIS Program via correspondence.

The benefit the NEIS program provided this couple was the opportunity to set up a business servicing customers in their local community. While Mick and Sue always believed their business idea held great potential, they were discouraged by the possible pitfalls associated with running a small business at home.

After completing the NEIS modules, Mick and Sue were reassured that their business idea would not only be viable but also successful. The program and mentor support also helped the couple to identify actual small business pitfalls and implement systems to avoid these problems.

"Our biggest worry was that we were quite naive when it came to book keeping practices and what was expected of us as a small business."

"However, the NEIS program gave us the motivation to start the business as well as the self-discipline to set routines required for Mr Micks" - Sue Dash

'Mr Micks' is not the only success story for this couple. Shortly after the establishment of Mr Micks, a second business plan was developed to start 'Chocolate Drops' - a chocolate shop located in Two Rocks offering hand-crafted chocolates designed and produced solely by Sue Dash.

As a trained Chocolatier, Sue took the knowledge and principles gained by the NEIS program to set up her own small business even being named "Wanneroo Shire - Best Small Business for 2004". Sue currently employs two staff to run Chocolate Drops and teaches Chocolate Making Classes through TAFE and the Adult Learning Centre.
